A small sacrifice
Part 1: Buddha (pendant)
2023
Brass, water, mutton, sheep’s blood
Technique: Metalsmithing, Ice casting
Variable size
This project began with the alternating sensations of numbness and clarity as ice melts on the skin, and with the sight of Chinese New Year markets: small mountains of inexpensive jade Buddha pendants, each carrying a modest, repeated wish.
Adapting a traditional gold-inlaid-jade (jin xiang yu) setting, the pendant holds Buddhas cast in ice. Worn against the body, they melt and are replaced—like a small sacrifice enacted in the body, pointing to individual wishes continually consumed and substituted within the collectivist torrent of the Covid-19 period.
